MATH
The 3rd Grade Math curriculum includes the following areas of concentration: addition and subtraction of numbers 1-18, addition and subtraction of 2, 3, 4 digit numbers, place value, measurement, graphing, multiplication, division, fraction, decimals, time and money.
Students will:
• Recall addition facts to 18
• Recall subtraction facts to 16
• Solve problems using cumulative computational skills
• Apply skills of estimation
• Recognize and use ordinal numbers
• Round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and dollar
• Tell time
• Measure in metric numbers
• Recall multiplication facts through 12 x 12
• Understand geometric terms (i.e., congruence, symmetry)
• Interpret charts and graphs
• Recall division facts
• Write and compare fractions
• Use customary measurement
• Apply problem-solving strategies to all content areas
• Identify patterns and functions of addition and subtraction tables
• Apply mental math across content areas
• Adding 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction problems
• Place value
4th Grade Math program gives students exposure to many activities that strengthen their skills with numbers. Emphasis is placed on multiplication, division and regrouping, estimation, geometry, fractions, graphing skills, decimals and customary measurement. The program also reinforces math reasoning, critical thinking strategies, problem solving and the application of all processes.
Students will:
• Understand numeration through hundred millions and basic numbe
facts of addition and subtraction
• Compare and order whole numbers and properties of addition
and subtraction
• Estimate by rounding
• Understand multiplication facts and properties of multiplication
• Understand division facts, the relationship between multiplication
and division and the properties of division
• Tell time and elapsed time
• Understand estimating products |

• Estimate quotients
• Fractions and mixed numbers
• Equivalent fractions and finding part of a set
• Add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators
• Decimals through hundredths
• Decimal place value and estimation with decimals
• Add and subtract decimals to hundredths

of exploration, questioning and thinking)
• Make and use simple tables and graphs and find averages
• Solve mental math problems using the four basic operations
• Apply the knowledge of the four basic operations to writing
and computing money
• Understand and use the calculator and computer as a helpful math tool
In addition to the above, the 5th Grade Math curriculum emphasizes computation and problem solving skills. Students become proficient in the multiplication and division of whole numbers, addition, subtraction and multiplication of decimals and division of decimals by whole numbers.
Various estimation techniques are taught not only as a way to do mental math, but also as a means to evaluate the reasonableness of exact answers. Students are encouraged to explain the computational and problem solving processes they use, both orally and in writing.
Additional topics include the properties of addition and multiplication, order of operations, prime and composite numbers, data collection and analysis, and introductory plane and solid geometry. |
