MATH
By the end of 1st Grade, students will learn to create number stories and use appropriate strategies to recall addition facts to 20, recognize and know money values up to $1, identify and compare attributes among various shapes, compare two digit numbers, tell time, understand and work with hundreds charts to enhance mental math skills.
To develop a strong foundation in math, students must successfully learn basic addition and subtraction. By the end of the year, each student should be able to answer a mathematical question under a predetermined amount of time.
The 1st Grade Math curriculum includes the following areas of concentration: addition and subtraction of numbers 1-18, addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers, place value, time and money, geometry and graphing, measurement, fractions, patterns and functions.
The 2nd Grade Math curriculum focuses on mastering basic facts with emphasis on 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. Major topical areas include place value, counting to 1000, time, measurement, multiplication, fractions, money, geometry, graphing, patterns and functions.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies, students learn about topics such as self, family, and community. Children also learn map skills as well as school and classroom rules.Students take an active role in decision-making and responsibility within the classroom environment. |

2nd Grade students will understand how laws and rules affect their lives. They will learn they are part of a community and how that community operates as a whole. Students will learn about historical figures and landmarks and the roles they played in shaping our country. Students will learn about important holidays and foreign lands to learn about the traditions and history of different cultures. Geography and mapping skills are also integrated into the program.
SCIENCE
By the end of 1st Grade, students will have covered topics such as people, plants, animals, insects, weights and measures. Various hands-on activities are incorporated into the science program.
The 2nd Grade Science program introduces students to topics of living things, the world around us, the earth and sky, and our human body. Research topics and experiments give students the opportunity to explore and ask questions. Students also learn about the environment and perform scientific experiments. |
