| PRIMARY LEVEL |
MUSIC
The objectives for Grade 1-2 music students include acquiring the music skills of basic-level theory (staff, clefs, notes), listening and performing through use of percussion instruments, choral activities and written theory exercises.
By the end of Grade 1, students will:
• Identify examples of beat in daily life and in music
• Identify rhythms in language
• Identify basic 4/4 and 3/4 rhythm in a simple song
• Identify higher and lower pitched sounds in music
• Identify examples of dynamics in music
• Identify different tempi
• Reproduce specific pitches in group call and response activities
• Respond to different kinds of music through physical movement
• Sing songs of various cultures
• Create rhythmic patterns using various sounds
• Sing expressively
• Create simple accompaniments and sound effects to songs, poems
and chants using voice or percussion instruments
• Accompany songs using rhythm instruments or body percussion
• Create and perform musical compositions
• Communicate thoughts and feelings about music through language
and art
• Identify ways in which music is part of daily life
• Recognize that moods can be created through music
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
• Distinguish between beat and rhythm
• Identify the beat, rhythm, melodic contour, dynamics and temp
in familiar pieces of music
• Recognize that sounds and silences of different durations may be
represented by symbols
• Identify instruments within the percussion family
of orchestral instruments
• Sing songs of various cultures
• Substitute words in songs or create new verses
• Create melodic contour maps that indicate the direction of pitches
• Sing expressively
• Create or arrange music to accompany a reading or dramatization using
rhythm instruments
• Create and perform musical compositions using their knowledge of the
elements of music and sound patterns
• Respond to music from various cultures
• Communicate thoughts and feelings aboutmusic through language, art
and media
• Identify feelings evoked by particular pieces of music
• Identify and explain effects of different musical choices

TECHNOLOGY
The technology program for Grades 1-2 builds upon the skills acquired since Nursery. At the Grade 1-2 level, students are given increasing amounts of computer-based instructions that reinforce and coincide with classroom lessons.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Classes will learn to master physical skills that promote stronger and healthier individuals. Students will learn and improve their skills in sports such as baseball, soccer and others. Children are encouraged to learn, improve, adapt and maintain coordination, endurance and social aspects of athletic development through:
• Natural Movement: lifting objects, jumping, crawling, climbing,
balancing, throwing and running. These activities develop muscle and
bone growth and improve cardiovascular strength. Warm-ups and classes
focus on obstacle courses that support functional strength.
• Physical Activities:Children participate in games that require individual
and team effort.Teamwork and sportsmanship are encouraged in class.
LIBRARY
The Library curriculum at the primary level introduces students to library procedures. Students learn how to locate material and select books based on their interests. Students participate in author studies to learn about particular authors and illustrators. Listening skills and following directions are an integral part of the curriculum. Children learn to identify fiction and non-fiction and locate these books within the library. Hands-on projects are used to coordinate with the story selection to reinforce and recall stories andcharacters. Students learn to identify main parts of a book and the main characters of a story. Folk tales and fairytales from various ethnic cultures are studied and compared.
Students are exposed to classic and contemporary authors and illustrators. Chapter books, book series, sports stories are used to encourage lifelong readers. Basic research skills are introduced and students become increasingly familiar with the organization and purpose of the school library, as well as other libraries. Almanac, atlas and dictionary skills are emphasized. Activities include reading novels, book talks, sharing personal interest reports. Caldecott Books and poetry are read and the reference section is utilized. |
