MATH
The 6th Grade Math curriculum encourages students to understand relationships between numbers and computation methods. Prime factorization, greatest common factor, least common multiple, equivalent fractions and conversions to/from fractions, decimals, percents and mixed numbers are some concepts that enable students to examine these relationships. Computational skills are expanded to include the use of exponents in the order of operations, division of decimals by decimals and the four basic operations with fractions and mixed numbers.
Changing units within the customary and metric systems of measurement enhance students‚ number sense and their ability with fractions and decimals. Ratios and proportions are examined and used in applications such as rates, unit rates, scale and finding the percentage of a number. An introduction to algebra is provided through writing and evaluating variable expressions and solving one-step equations.
Continued emphasis is placed on problem solving strategies, the ability to articulate the understanding of concepts and processes using proper terminology and testing for reasonableness of computational results. Students are also given additional exposure to geometry and data collection and analysis.
The 7th Grade Math curriculum consists of two classes-math and pre-algebra. Students acquire an understanding of positive and negative integers and absolute value, enabling them to perform operations and solve equations involving negative numbers. They examine the concepts of rational and irrational numbers and square roots, apply prior knowledge of ratios and proportions to the study of similar figures and percent of change.
Students cover geometric concepts and formulas such as surface area and volume of solids. Students practice problem solving through algebraic equations and previously acquired strategies. The pre-algebra course includes the study of negative exponents, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, trigonometric ratios, the Pythagorean Theorem, simple and compound interest and graphing in the coordinate plane.
The 8th Grade Math curriculum offers pre-algebra and algebra. The latter is a high-school level course wherein strong math skills and proven performance in pre-algebra are prerequisites. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to be placed into the next level in high school.
Students use all previously acquired concepts and skills to solve increasingly complex equations. They perform operations with monomials and polynomials and factor polynomials. Algebraic fractions, fractional coefficients, fractional equations and graphing linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, direct and inverse variations, functions and systems of equations are covered. Algebraic problem solving is applied to the concepts of area, uniform motion, cost, value and income, wind and current, and relationships among numbers. |

SOCIAL STUDIES
The 6th Grade Social Studies curriculum covers a multitude of topics. In Geography, students learn about the geography of continents and about their rivers, mountains and resources. In World History, students learn about the heirs of Rome and Persia, Empires in Asia, overland trade, new directions for Europe and World Religions.
The 7th Grade Social Studies curriculum covers additional topics. In Geography, students learn about North and South America and Africa. In American History and World Wars, students learn about Spanish conquests, colonial America, the growth of democracy, the beginning of the Industrial Age, growth of nationalism, the early 20th century, America after World War I and the later 20th century.
Students learn through various projects such as interviewing a historical figure, recreating early American civilization, songs and poems, charts relating to persons and places studied. Students learn through videos such a "Amistad", "Glory", "Incas" and "Indians and the Trail of Tears".
The 8th Grade Social Studies curriculum covers additional topics. In Geography, students learn about immigrant settlement patterns in America. In Civics, students learn about America: A cultural mosaic, Groups and Institutions, Citizenship, Americas Political Heritage, Creating the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Our Living Constitution, the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, Our Nation Among Many.Students learn about a variety of themes and topics within each of these units.
Students learn through field trips, such as the Frick Collection as well as through educational videos such as "Congress", "Presidents", "Peter Jennings and the Civil Rights Movements", "First Person Singular " John Hope Franklin", "Ellis Island". Other projects that students can participate in include Model United Nations, Debates, Gun Control, Immigration and Human Rights Issues throughout the world. |
