HEALTH INSTRUCTION
The Health Education course covers themes on physical, mental, social, emotional and environmental health. Emphasis is placed on those health issues that are most common in today's society. Curriculum topics introduced to students are grade-level appropriate. The health program is progressive and each year, students build upon the knowledge they acquired in the previous year. Students are challenged to set goals to develop healthy lifestyles to achieve a healthy body and mindset.

Topics covered include growth and development, nutrition, physical activity & fitness, healthy consumerism & choice management, mental health, disease prevention & control, safety & injury prevention, interpersonal relationships, family life, reproduction/sexuality, tobacco, alcohol & dangerous substances, community & public health, violence prevention and ecological health.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Upper Level students are part of a Physical Education program that encourages them to go beyond their average strength and abilities to become stronger and healthier people. Students participate in physical activities such as games that require individual and team effort. Students also play strategy and logical thinking games. Teamwork and sportsmanship are encouraged and emphasized in class.
Upper Level

Students also participate in natural movement exercises which include lifting objects, jumping, crawling, climbing, balancing, throwing and running. These activities strengthen and develop muscle and bone growth while also contributing towards cardiovascular health.

The Presidential Fitness Challenge Test is a set of five tests designed to challenge the students‚ strength and abilities. Students are tested twice per year. A practice test is given in the fall and the final test is given during the spring. Between the fall and spring tests, students improve and develop their fitness levels.

The Exuberant Animal fitness program is a recent addition to the physical education curriculum for students from Pre-K until the 8th grade. This program exposes students to a different approach to fitness. The Physical Education teacher demonstrates the exercises. Exuberant Animal promotes physical happiness and a positive environment amongst our peers through play-based movement. Movements are functional fitness that appear to the students simply as games. Movements improve strength, balance, and coordination and reduce stress. The exercises are designed for beginner students as well as experienced athletes.

LIBRARY
Literature for young adults is emphasized in the upper level at the Hovnanian School. Short- and long-term projects that require the use of library resources are assigned while correlating to the English, Social Studies and Science curriculum.
